A few of Evan's favorite things:

"Good music,
Good meals and
Good Strings!"

FAVORITE MOVIE:
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, because Mr. Smith stood up for his principles of right and wrong even though doing so made him the object of much contempt and ridicule; he persevered and won.

FAVORITE COMPOSERS:
Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, because the music is so wonderful and because they held themselves to such high aesthetic standards.

FAVORITE PASTIME:
Beside playing the mandolin? Being with family... Being at Church... Reading about acoustics and music theory...

FAVORITE FOOD:
Fettuccini Alfredo...

FAVORITE DESSERT:
Vanilla milk shake...

FAVORITE PICK:
Small tear drop, rather thin, rounding and bevelling the edges with an emery board, as classical guitarists do with their nails...

FAVORITE STRINGS:
D'Addario extra lights... Why is kind of a long story, but it relates to the flexibility afforded by gut (light-tension) strings used by mandolinists 230 years ago...

PRIMARY MANDOLIN:
I have used my Gilchrist 5C for all playing situations the last 6+ years... It would be fun to have a great vintage oval-hole instrument, though...

MANDOLIN START:
My first bluegrass buddy, Jon Bluemel... He loaned me his Dad's bowl back (the Bluemel family eventually gave it to me), and I was hooked... He told me to plant my right ring finger and pinky on the pickguard, just like Earl Scruggs did on the face of his 5-string banjo; that eventually suited my duo-style technique very well...
To Answer the #1 Question asked by fans of the plucked string:

Evan uses a customized Clayton USA .50 gauge mandolin pick.

Interesting Tidbit
Evan loves combining a Schertler DYN-M pickup with an AKG C1000 mic on his Gilchrist 5C mandolin.

Welcome
Evan Marshall, mandolinist for all seasons
, is the master of duo-style, solo mandolin playing. As a musician you will see him as Evan Marshall, solo mandolinist; Evan Marshall, fiddler in Cody Bryant's Riders of the Purple Sage, Billy Evan on mandolin and fiddle in Billy and the Hillbillies and in the Fiddlin' Marshall Brothers. Evan's tux and tie music is Chamber style on CD's such as The Bridges of Orange County, Tone Poets and more. Evan performs home concerts, private and corporate events, and is a much sought after private music instructor.
